Designed by British architects Ron Phillips and Alan Fitch in 1956, the new City Hall complex was built in the late 1950s With its clean lines and stark geometric forms, the new Hall is an example of the International style fashionable at the time. The structure was constructed using steel and concrete, and much of the equipment was of steel, glass and anodized aluminium. The building is occupying an area of 11,000 square meters on the newly reclaimed seafront formed by two buildings and a memorial garden. The City Hall is a complex providing municipal services, including performing venues and libraries. It is a landmark for Arts and Entertainment, which hosts plays and important festivals, such as Hong Kong Arts Festival e Hong Kong International Film Festival. Among the other things is home to the Central Public Library, Kong Art Museum and Hong Kong Museum of History.
The lighting, realized by Space Cannon in 2004 with the use of Athena, has been the first architectural lighting on an entire building, using DMX and Led technology only. Every single window is lighted up by a linear led item, using dynamic light but maintaining the natural grandeur of the building. The design was heavily focused on exploiting the natural architectural features.
City Hall has become an important feature in the Symphony of Lights Spectacular on Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour.
