James Turrell - The Wolfsburg project

Monumental fascination of the "Wolfsburg Project" - 24 October 2009 - 26 September 2010

On 23 October, 60 Zumtobel guests were able to enjoy a new experience in the perception of light at the opening of the James Turrell exhibition at Wolfsburg's Art Museum. The "Ganzfeld Piece" is the largest installation ever implemented by the American artist in a museum and enables visitors to experience unique sensory perceptions in this homogeneous visual field. Twelve meters high and encompassing an area of 700 square metres, the installation comprises two rooms that merge into each other, called Viewing Space and Sensing Space, both completely empty and flooded with coloured light that keeps slowly changing. The spotlights and control systems required for this project were supplied by Space Cannon. The installation will be on display in Wolfsburg until 26 September 2010, after which the luminaires will be used to illuminate the exterior of the museum - a truly sustainable lighting solution!
