In a setting as splendid as the Teatro Regio in Turin, on the occasion of the Christmas concert organised by ITP (Invest in Turin and Piedmont) and masterfully compered by Italian comic Piero Chiambretti, the 2003 Greenfield Italia prize for best Italian company abroad, after Motorola Italy and Merloni Elettrodomestici, was awarded to Space Cannon, which has succeeded in contributing, with the magic of its lights in all corners of the world, to making every event unique.
Having made the front pages in Italy, and not just for having re-created with its lights the Twin Towers in New York, the past record of the Piedmont company numbers important projects all over the world, both in the area of major events (the Olympic Games in Sydney and Salt Lake City, the world cup championships in Korea and Japan) and in architecture (one example being the illumination of the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, the greatest fixed lighting system in the world). "This prizeâ€, claimed the company's chairman, Bruno Baiardi, "while it represents on the one hand the reward for so much tireless work, on the other hand it is a starting point for us towards that which we have named ‘the Copernican revolution of the Sun King', destined to revolutionise the entire sector of public, private and commercial lighting and lighting for entertainment.
Light will thus cease to be a purely technical factor and no longer of passive value in our day-to-day lives, but will become an active part and an aesthetic and emotional factor. If, as Andrew Carnegie claimedâ€, the chairman concluded, "the skill of a man lies in succeeding in being surrounded by better men than himself, then allow me to express my thanks to all those who, paradoxically in the shadows for those who create, shape and colour light, have contributed to achieving this prize awarded by a land of excellence, Piedmont, to a company capable of gaining consensus throughout the world for its Italian, or rather Piedmont-made, solutions.â€
