Altarpiece by Ghirlandaio

Narni, Italy - 2007

The impressive Pala or altarpiece by Domenico Bigordi, known as Ghirlandaio, is housed in the museum in Palazzo Eroli in Narni, a tourist attraction in Umbria . Commissioned from the Florentine artist in 1486, it is one of the highest expressions of renaissance style and especially appealing thanks to its radiant colours, refined technique and complex composition.

The coming together of art and lighting generates a new way of interpreting the work and allows a focus on details, not just exhibiting but also guiding viewers in construing and understanding the idiom of the composition. Illuminating not in order to put on a show but instead to free the potential of light.

The Space Cannon custom LED spotlights respect natural colours, do not emit thermal and ultraviolet rays which could damage pigments and enhance the luminosity and rich colours of the work.

The lighting system was custom-made, using 3W white light modules. The spotlights, positioned to the front and side of the altarpiece, have special optics allowing very careful control of the light output. Illumination of the surrounding areas can be controlled from a console, focusing visitors' attention on the various details in order to explore the work.
